Magazines Available in Overdrive/Libby

The Durham Public Library has an extensive collection of digital magazines available through the Libby app.

A sampling of digital magazines available include: The Economist, National Geographic, Bon Appetit, Country Living, Runner’s World, Cosmopolitan, Vanity Fair, and over 3,000 more. Click here for a full list.

Digital magazines have no wait lists or holds, do not count towards checkout limits and provide readers the option to renew their selections. Library name patrons can also download magazines to Libby for offline use. Readers can browse lists of magazines within the app and search by format to find available titles.

Did you know that if you don’t create your own estate plan, some of your end of life decisions are dictated by the state of Connecticut? Even if you already have an estate plan there’s a good chance it needs updating because laws often change. If you would like to decide how your estate is divided, who is responsible for your care, who gets custody of your minor children, and more… this program is for you! Come learn from an experienced elder law attorney about important documents every adult should have. You’ll learn about wills, trusts, powers of attorney (POA), and healthcare directives. Join us for a Virtual Harbor Seal Encounter via Zoom with the New England Aquarium! Engage with a marine mammal trainer as they conduct a training session with an Atlantic Harbor Seal, located right out front of the Aquarium! Learn about how they train, why they train, and what you can do to protect the ocean environment for these amazing animals! 

Geared towards children and families of all ages.

Dream Interpretation

Have you had a dream that woke you in the middle of the night or a recurring dream and you knew it had a message for you? Or dreamed in color and wondered about its significance? Join us for a lecture with Rev. Lee Ireland as she discusses symbols, dream dictionaries, and journals and offers examples and tips on how to focus on analyzing your dreams. Using examples from Native tribes, Sanford’s Dreams and Healing, and her own experience as a Spiritual Director at Mercy Center in Madison, CT, participants will learn how to work with the gift of dreams. Food Explorers: Gnocchi

Join Food Explorers to learn how to make Sweet Potato Gnocchi in this Zoom class and your dish will be ready to eat by dinner. Registered Dietitian, Megan, of Food Explorers will walk you through the steps to make your own gnocchi. Please be sure to ask any food and nutrition related questions you may have! This recipe can be adjusted to accommodate any dairy or gluten allergies.

You will need to supply the following ingredients:
1 LB sweet potatoes
Regular or GF flour
Salt
Optional Parmesan and Ricotta cheese.
This recipe also pairs wonderfully with a brown butter sauce, so if you’d like to join in making this, you’ll need butter and heavy cream OR milk.

This two part series will help you learn the history of a house in CT. Bryna O’Sullivan will share her expertise for doing research.

House History: Who’s Lived in Your House? (Part II)
Identify the homeowners and learn the history of your house! Using the census, local history, newspapers, photographs, maps, and architectural surveys to trace the  story behind the people who once lived in your home.  Bryna O’Sullivan will walk us through using these resources.

New-England based authors have new books out this fall! Join us for a virtual author event  featuring New York Times bestselling author Archer Mayor in conversation with fellow New England mystery writers Sarah Stewart Taylor, Paula Munier, and Julia Spencer-Fleming. A Vote of Her Own

How did the women of CT work for – or against – the right to vote? Join us as we explore the fight for women’s suffrage in Connecticut. We will look at photos, letters, and pamphlets from the CT Historical Society’s collection to understand one of the most hard-fought political battles of American History.
